💡 Daily Reminder: Stay humble, stack sats
Bitcoiners,
You probably started buying Bitcoin because you wanted financial gains from price appreciation.
So did I.
After studying it in-depth, I realized it's much more than an asset to store value.
I realized it’s a freedom tool because nobody can stop you from transacting with it.
So here’s a hypothetical scenario, what if the government decided how you can or cannot spend your money?
And if they did not like how you were spending your money, they could turn off your access to banks and payment methods in a matter of seconds.
Well, that’s happening across the world today, even in developed nations.
Luckily, there is a solution that enables you to freely spend your hard-earned money: Bitcoin.
Here is an example of a modern-day government using fiat money to control its population and how you can use Bitcoin as a freedom tool to fight against government overreach in the future.
Canadian Trucker Protest
The 2022 Freedom Convoy was a protest organized by Canadian truckers to combat COVID-19 vaccine mandates and lockdowns imposed by the government.
More than 15,000 protesters converged in the nation’s capital of Ottawa blocking major bridges used for transporting goods with their semi-trucks. The organizers launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe, a popular fundraising website, to help pay for gas and basic supplies during the protest. Trade losses and wage losses from the protest prompted the Canadian government to invoke the Emergencies Act, giving them additional power outside existing laws to stop the protest. The government used the Emergencies Act to force GoFundMe to end the campaign, seize all the funds donated, and shut off the bank accounts of individuals both involved in the protest and those that donated to the campaign. This was an unprecedented move from a modern-day government.
As a response, a group of Bitcoin enthusiasts organized an alternative fundraising campaign outside the control of the Canadian government and successfully donated over $600,000 to the protestors on the ground using Bitcoin.
How Bitcoin Grants You Freedom
Bitcoin is a freedom tool.
Nobody can stop you from transacting with it because a centralized government does not control it like all other fiat currencies. Individuals have the ability to run a Bitcoin node on an old laptop, connect to the Bitcoin network, and send or receive bitcoin transactions without asking any other 3rd party for permission to do so. Enhanced measures can make the transactions private to add an extra layer of security.
Not if, but when the day comes that your government abuses its power to suppress your freedom, make sure you know how to run a Bitcoin node to transact bitcoin and take back your freedom.
Final Thoughts
Since I’m writing this article on July 4th, I have been thinking about the parallels between Independence Day in the United States and Bitcoin.
In the age of digital surveillance and increasing control by governments, Bitcoin is the modern-day Declaration of Independence. It's a tool used to opt out of a monetary system that is not serving you like the Founding Fathers opted out of British control that was not serving them in 1776. The analogy implies Bitcoin users are modern-day Founding Fathers using the financial tool to grant independence from governments acting outside the interest of its people.
Happy 4th of July to all of you modern-day Founding Fathers promoting freedom by using Bitcoin and educating others about it.
